La Lupita formed in Mexico City in the late 1970s, with Lupita D'Alessio on vocals, Memo Gil on guitar, Alejandro Marcovich on bass, and Carlos Martínez on drums. Their debut album 'A Obscuras' came out in 1981, and its title track became a hit. The band's sound drew from boleros and rock en español, which was less common at the time.
They followed up with albums like 'Noche Sin Noche' in 1982 and 'Tirando a Matar' in 1983. Songs such as 'Adios José' and 'Como Sera La Mujer' show their range, moving between rock energy and more traditional Mexican balladry. Their lyrics sometimes touched on subjects that drew criticism from more conservative listeners.
La Lupita kept recording through the late 1980s and into the 1990s, putting out records like 'Un Nuevo Amanecer' and 'Rosas y Espinas'. The group's lineup and sound shifted over time, but D'Alessio's voice remained the constant center. They released a compilation called 'La Historia de la Lupita' in 1997.
