Lab Decomposição formed in São Paulo in 1985, started by Kalú and Zumbi. They worked with sound manipulation and improvisation from the beginning, and their performances often mixed music with elements of noise and theater. Drummer Renato Ratier joined them in 1990.
In 1993 they put out the album 'Ó Nave Mãe, Por Que Tardas?', which got attention outside Brazil. The title track is a slow, drifting piece that feels like a call or a question. It became something people in the underground scene there knew.
They kept making records after that, like A Dança das Borboletas in 1998 and A Nave Mãe Voltou in 2006. Their sound stayed experimental, and they played live shows that could be intense or abstract. They didn't really fit into a single category.
