Lab Janjua formed in the early 2000s around brothers Shafqat Ali on vocals and Khizer Hussain on guitar, with Syed Nishat Ahmed on drums and Salman Ahmed on bass. Their debut single 'Yaadan' came out in 2001 and got them noticed quickly.
They had a sound that mixed Pakistani classical elements with rock and pop, with Shafqat Ali's voice being a clear feature. Songs like 'Pyar Karke' became popular, along with 'Tum Hi To Ho' and 'Dilruba'.
In 2002, Shafqat Ali was arrested after an incident at a concert. The band kept releasing music despite that and some other controversies, including plagiarism claims and debates about how Western their style was.
They played shows in the Middle East, Europe, and North America. Their music stayed in rotation on Pakistani radio and influenced some younger artists coming up after them.
