Lack of Skin formed in Los Angeles in 1997, started by bassist Shane Embury and vocalist Anthony "A.J." Johnson. Their first album came out in 2000, which included the song "Anna." They put out several more records over the next decade, like The New Disease in 2003 and The Plague of Freedom in 2006.
Their music mixed industrial and alternative rock sounds, with Johnson's vocals over driving rhythms and synths. Other songs in their catalog include "Boa," "Nova," and "Seeking Dead Men." The band's lineup changed over time, and by one point it included guitarist Wes Borland and drummer Martin Atkins.
In 2007, some critics accused the band of glamorizing drug use and self-harm in their lyrics. Lack of Skin defended their work as an honest look at darker experiences. They kept recording and performing, with albums like The Faithless in 2010 and Maggot in 2014.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
