Lady Newton formed in Salvador, Brazil, with vocalist Renata Spelman, guitarist Lucas Campos, bassist Marcus Costa, and drummer Eduardo Melo. They started playing small clubs and festivals before their 2010 debut album 'A Origem' got some attention.
Their 2014 album 'Ampulheta' included the title track and 'Sevilha,' mixing Brazilian rhythms like samba and maracatu with alternative rock. The band toured Brazil and gained a following with their live shows.
In 2016, Spelman faced accusations of cultural appropriation from indigenous activists, leading to a public apology. She has also spoken about dealing with anxiety and depression. Their 2021 album 'Atemporais' featured collaborations with Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
