Lady Sir formed when Hannah Cartwright and Ryan Bembridge met in London in 2014. They started writing songs together, with Cartwright's vocals and lyrics working alongside Bembridge's guitar and keyboard arrangements. Their first EP came out the following year.
Their 2017 track "Let Temps Passe" became their most recognizable song. Cartwright's writing often dealt with identity and time, while Bembridge built the musical settings around her voice. They released another album called Forest in 2021.
Cartwright is a transgender woman who has spoken about facing discrimination in the music industry. The duo's work has remained a collaboration between the two of them since they began.
