Editor's note

Lagwagon, the California punk band with melodic weight

A steady force in melodic hardcore since the early '90s, anchored by Joey Cape's socially conscious lyrics.

For a good sense of their range, try 'Kids in America' and 'Island of Shame'. They're both from the '90s and hold up well.

Lagwagon's songs like 'Know It All' and 'Billy Club' gave their fast-paced punk a bit more substance than some of their peers. They mixed melodic hardcore with straightforward California energy, as tracks like 'Kids in America' and 'Island of Shame' show. That blend helped them build a steady following through consistent touring and records on Fat Wreck Chords.

They formed in Goleta in 1990, signed with Fat Wreck Chords in 1992, and put out their first album 'Duh' that same year. Their 1995 album 'Hoss' got some attention, and they kept releasing records like 'Blaze' in 2003 through the 2000s.

Lagwagon formed in Goleta, California in 1990, when high school friends Joey Cape, Chris Flippin, and Shawn Dewey started playing together. They signed with Fat Wreck Chords in 1992, changed their name from Section 8 to Lagwagon, and put out their first album 'Duh' that same year. Dave Raun joined on bass after Dewey left, and that lineup stuck around for a while.

Their 1995 album 'Hoss' got some attention, and songs like 'May 16' and 'Billy Club' became staples in their set. Cape's lyrics often touched on social issues, which gave their fast-paced punk a bit more weight than some of their peers. They kept putting out records through the 2000s, including 'Blaze' in 2003.

Lagwagon's sound mixed melodic hardcore with the straightforward energy of California punk. Tracks like 'Kids in America' and 'Island of Shame' show that range. They never became huge mainstream stars, but they built a steady following through consistent touring and records on Fat Wreck Chords.
