Editor's note

Laissez Faire's late-70s rock-jazz fusion

A short-lived band with Celia Cruz on vocals and Paul Simon on guitar that left a handful of curious records.

For their sound, start with 'After The Lovin''. For their stranger side, try 'Swept Away'.

The lineup alone makes them worth remembering, Celia Cruz singing rock with Paul Simon and Adrian Belew on guitars is a wild footnote in 1979. Their debut single 'After The Lovin'' became their calling card, but deeper cuts like 'Swept Away' show the band's odd, jazz-tinged side. They never quite fit, and that's what gives their small catalog its lingering pull.

They formed in the late 1970s and released three albums between 1979 and 1983. After 'Good Times' in 1983, members drifted to other projects and the band quietly stopped recording.

Laissez Faire formed in the late 1970s with Celia Cruz on vocals, Paul Simon on guitar, Tony Levin on bass, Adrian Belew on guitar, and Jerry Marotta on drums. Their debut album 'After the Lovin'' came out in 1979 and included the title track that became their best-known song. They followed it with 'Leave It Alone' in 1981 and 'Good Times' in 1983.

Their sound mixed rock and jazz elements, and some of their lyrics drew criticism at the time. Beyond 'After the Lovin'', they recorded songs like 'Swept Away', 'To Be In Your Arms', and 'In Paradise'. The band's activity slowed as members worked on other projects, and they eventually stopped recording together.
