Lake Malawi started as a band called The Mals in 2012, formed by four friends in Vienna: Clemens Rehbein, Philipp Hauer, Paul Rechsteiner, and Markus Wurthner. They got their break when Austrian radio station FM4 picked up their single 'Friend Of a Friend,' which became a hit in Austria.
After some early recognition, they had to change their name from The Mals to Lake Malawi in 2016 due to a trademark dispute with a German band that already used the name. They put out their first album, 'Surrounded by Water,' in 2017, followed by 'Fake News' in 2019 and 'Plastic Army' in 2021.
