Lakim was a hip-hop group from Compton, California, formed in 1988. The group consisted of Karim Reed, his brother Mark "DJ Battlecat" Reed, and Anthony "Ant-Dog" Stewart. Their music had a raw quality that fit with what was happening in West Coast rap at the time.
Their debut album, 'Paid the Cost,' came out in 1990 and included the track 'A Pimp Named Slickback.' The song's direct lyrics about street life and Battlecat's production gave it a particular weight. They followed that with two more albums, 'The Lost Files' in 1991 and 'Reality Check' in 1993.
After the group ended, Karim Reed worked on solo material.
