Editor's note

Lamb of God's heavy riffs and Virginia roots

A Richmond metal band that started as Burn the Priest and built a sound on thrash and hardcore.

For their sound, check out 'Ghost Walking' or '512'. They're still putting out records like 'Omens'.

They've been at it since 1994, putting out nine studio albums that pull from thrash metal and hardcore. Songs like 'Ghost Walking' show their mix of aggression and groove, with Randy Blythe's vocals shifting between growls and cleaner passages. Their 2012 manslaughter trial in the Czech Republic became part of their story, though Blythe was acquitted.

Lamb of God started in Richmond, Virginia in 1994, originally calling themselves Burn the Priest. The lineup that would define their sound came together with vocalist Randy Blythe, guitarists Mark Morton and Willie Adler, bassist John Campbell, and drummer Chris Adler. They put out their first album under that original name in 1999.

Their music pulls from thrash metal and hardcore, built on heavy riffs and breakdowns. Songs like 'Memento Mori' and 'New Colossal Hate' show their mix of aggression and groove. Blythe's vocals shift between growls and cleaner passages, giving the intensity some texture.

In 2012, Blythe faced manslaughter charges in the Czech Republic after a fan died at a show. He was acquitted after a trial. The band has put out nine studio albums since 1999, including 'Ashes of the Wake' in 2004 and a self-titled record in 2020. Drummer Art Cruz joined later, replacing Chris Adler.
