Lápis de Cor formed in the late 1990s in São Paulo's Vila Madalena neighborhood, with Fábio Sampaio on vocals and bass, Fernando Gambier on guitar, and Pedro Guterres on drums. Their debut album came out in 2000 and included the track "Mania," which became their most recognizable song.
While "Mania" brought them attention, the band's path wasn't straightforward. They took a break in the early 2000s before returning in 2004 with another album called O Homem Invisível. They kept recording after that, putting out A Pequena Morte in 2007 and O Mundo Está Acabando in 2010.
Their music pulled from rock and funk alongside Brazilian rhythms, and another song people remember is "Me Leva Em Teu Sonho." The group developed a reputation for being somewhat elusive, with their story often mentioned alongside the success and complications that followed "Mania."
