Laraaji was born Edward Larry Gordon in Philadelphia. He started playing autoharp and zither early on, and in 1975 he began working seriously with the zither, which became his main instrument. He self-released his first album, 'Celestial Vibrations,' in 1978.
His best-known piece is probably 'All of a Sudden,' which came out in 1984 on the album 'Vision Song.' It's built around zitter patterns with some gentle vocal humming, and it became a quiet staple in ambient circles. He mostly performs solo.
