Lard formed in 1989 when Jello Biafra, who'd been in Dead Kennedys, teamed up with Al Jourgensen from Ministry. They brought in Paul Barker from Ministry, Jeff Ward from Nine Inch Nails, and Larry Thrasher from Prong. The music they made together was a rough mix of industrial noise, punk energy, and occasional funk grooves.
Their songs often took aim at American culture and politics with a sharp, satirical edge. '70's Rock Must Die' became something of an anthem for that attitude, rejecting nostalgia while other tracks like 'Drug Raid At 4 AM' and 'Can God Fill Teeth' kept up the confrontational tone. Their lyrics weren't subtle, and neither was their sound.
They put out records like The Last Temptation of Reid in 1990 and Pure Chewing Satisfaction the following year.
