Las Populares formed in 1984 with five members: Mario Díaz, Guillermo García, Rafael López, José Manuel Ortiz, and Julio González. They broke through two years later with their debut album 'Amiga Mía,' which gave them a national hit with the title track.
Their lyrics sometimes stirred up trouble. Songs like 'La Tirana' and 'La Mugrosita' drew criticism from religious groups and accusations of misogyny, but the band didn't back down from saying what they wanted to say. They kept putting out albums through the early 1990s, including 'El Pajarito' and 'Mi Amor.'
Las Populares called it quits in 1993. Their music, especially that early hit 'Amiga Mía,' still gets played and remembered.
