Laser formed in Sweden in the mid-1970s around Johanna Berglund and Thomas Andersson. Their music drew from Swedish folk tradition but incorporated other elements, with Berglund's vocals and Andersson's guitar work at the center. They released their self-titled debut album in 1976.
Their song 'Det Var En Gång En Fågel' gained attention beyond Sweden. The band recorded several more albums through the early 1980s, including 'Tusen Gånger Aldrig' in 1977 and 'Fjärde Världen' in 1982. They worked with folk musician Jan Johansson on the 1980 album 'Musiknatt'.
Some traditional folk listeners criticized their approach to the genre. Their lineup included Lars-Erik Rosell on bass, Peter Enqvist on drums, and Bengt Ber.
