Layl formed in 2016 as a quartet with María Elena "Lena" Arriaga on vocals, Álvaro "Alvi" Bermejo on guitar, Carlos "Cali" Sánchez on bass, and José "Pepe" Sánchez on drums. Their debut album that year, also called Te Prometo, included the song that first got them attention.
They followed that with Alma in 2018 and Raíces in 2021. Some listeners felt they were making traditional Latin music too commercial, but the band kept working. Songs like Cita and Estar Contigo show their mix of pop and folk elements.
Their music tends toward straightforward arrangements with clear vocal lines. Lo Más Básico and No Vuelvas are good examples of that approach, nothing too complicated, just the melody and rhythm doing the work.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
