Layluar formed in 2014 when three friends from São Paulo, Guilherme Cruz, Pedro Sena, and Rodrigo Senna, started playing together. They took their name from a lunar eclipse, which felt right for the kind of music they wanted to make. The group's first album, 'Samba Pop,' came out in 2017 and mixed samba rhythms with pop production.
In 2016, their song 'Não Quero Mais' with Marcio Cheezeyo drew some criticism for its lyrics about relationships. The band kept writing and recording through that period, putting out 'Lua Cheia' in 2019 and 'Ouro' in 2022. Those later records brought in more funk and electronic touches while keeping Cruz's vocals at the center.
Cruz handles most of the singing and songwriting, Sena plays guitar and adds backing vocals, and Senna covers drums and percussion. They've stayed the same three-piece since the beginning, working out of São Paulo.
