Le Tigre

Le Tigre formed in New York City in 1999 with Johanna Fateman, Kathleen Hanna, and Sadie Benning. Their debut album 'Le Tigre' established their approach: distorted electronic beats paired with lyrics that addressed feminist and queer themes directly. Songs like 'Deceptacon' and 'Hot Topic' became early anthems, mixing danceable energy with pointed social commentary.

Kathleen Hanna had previously been part of the feminist punk band Bikini Kill, which brought a certain raw, confrontational energy to the project. Sadie Benning's background in film and video added a visual dimension to their live shows and recordings. The trio's work was often described as electroclash, but it pulled from punk's DIY ethos as much as from dance music.

Their later albums, 'Feminist Sweepstakes' and 'This Island', continued exploring similar territory. Tracks like 'After Dark' and 'Eau D' Bedroom Dancing' maintained their blend of catchy melodies and political engagement. They were a band that made you want to move while also making you think, without ever separating the two impulses.

Le Tigre's straightforward approach to discussing gender, sexuality, and power in their lyrics resonated with a particular audience. They operated in that space where underground music and political ideas overlap, creating songs that functioned as both party starters and manifestos.
