Editor's note

Lea Michele, from Broadway to Glee and solo albums

A Broadway-trained singer who became a TV star and solo artist.

For a quick sense of her range, try Don't Rain On My Parade from Glee and her own Cannonball. They tell you most of what you need to know.

She earned a Tony nomination for Spring Awakening before Glee made her a household name. Her solo work, like the single Cannonball, shows a pop voice that can carry its own weight. The public scrutiny around her Glee behavior added a complicated layer to her story.

She started as a child performer on Broadway, landing her breakthrough in the 2006 revival of Spring Awakening. After Glee, she released albums like Louder and Places, shifting into a solo music career.

Lea Michele was born in the Bronx in 1986. She started performing in Broadway productions as a child, and got her breakthrough in 2006 playing Wendla Bergmann in the Broadway revival of Spring Awakening. That role earned her a Tony Award nomination.

In 2009 she joined the cast of Glee as Rachel Berry, a high school soprano. The show became a phenomenon, and while she was on it she also started a solo music career. Her debut album Louder came out in 2013 and reached number four on the Billboard 200. She followed it with Places in 2017 and Christmas in the City in 2019.

Some of her songs include Run To You, Cannonball, and Christmas In New York. In 2020 she faced allegations about her behavior on the Glee set, which led to a public apology and statements about wanting to do better.
