Leandro Gomes de Barros

Leandro Gomes de Barros came from the rural backlands of northeastern Brazil, where he grew up steeped in the local forró tradition. He was influenced by the accordionist Luiz Gonzaga, and his songs often drew from the experiences of people in that region. In 1967, he wrote the lyrics to 'Peleja de Riachão Com o Diabo,' a song based on a local legend about a farmer's battle with the devil. That track became widely known across Brazil for its vivid storytelling and haunting melody.

His music sometimes touched on themes like poverty and the mystical, which led to some pushback from more conservative circles. He kept writing and performing despite that, staying close to the sounds and stories of his home area.
