Background notes

Archive material and source history

Lee Fields started singing in the 1970s, drawing from the raw energy of James Brown and Otis Redding. He moved to New York City around that time, where he worked on his voice and stage presence for years before things really clicked. In 1992, he met bassist Kevin Banks and drummer Thomas Brenneck, which became the foundation for what would eventually be called Lee Fields & The Expressions.

Their 2009 album 'My World' was the record that brought them wider attention. It had a tight, soulful sound that felt both classic and immediate. They followed it with albums like 'Special Night' in 2012 and 'It Rains Love' in 2019. Songs like 'I Still Got It' and 'Eye To Eye' show Fields' weathered, powerful delivery over the band's steady grooves.

Fields was born in Wilmington, North Carolina in 1954. As a teenager, he had a band called the Fabulous Five. The music he makes now feels less like a revival and more like a continuation of something he's been doing his whole life.
