Leevi And The Leavings

Leevi and the Leavings formed in 1978 around singer Gösta Sundqvist, guitarist Risto Paananen, and bassist Juha Karhu. Their debut album came out in 1981, but it took a few years for their particular sound to find an audience. They were often described as melancholic, which at first kept them from wider recognition.

Things shifted in 1985 with the album 'Raha ja henki' and its single 'Elämää'. That song became a hit, pushing the band into the Finnish mainstream. The attention brought some criticism from those who found their outlook too bleak, but they kept working. Over the next two decades, they released a steady stream of albums, including 'Vartioin mä sinua', 'Pohjois-Karjala', and 'Raparperi'.

Sundqvist's voice and lyrics defined their music, which often dealt plainly with love, loneliness, and everyday life. Songs like 'Toteemipaalu' and 'Amalia' are good examples of their straightforward, bittersweet style. The core lineup stayed mostly the same through their run, which ended when Sundqvist died in 2003.
