Left For Dead formed in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2002. Their name came from the bleak feeling of their hometown, and their music leaned into that raw, introspective territory. Brian Welch, who had previously been in Korn, handled lead vocals and guitar, bringing a gritty style shaped by personal struggles.

Their 2005 song 'A Nice Place to Raise Children' became a focal point, dealing directly with childhood abuse in unflinching lyrics.
