Leftfield formed in the early 1990s as the duo of Paul Daley and Neil Barnes. Their debut album 'Leftism' came out in 1995 and became a touchstone for electronic music at the time. The track 'A Final Hit' from that record gives a good sense of their approach, heavy breakbeats, ambient textures, and a kind of cinematic weight that felt different from straightforward dance music.
They followed up with 'Rhythm and Stealth' in 1999, which included 'Afrika Shox' with guest vocals from Afrika Bambaataa. The band went quiet for a while after that, with Barnes dealing with personal issues. They eventually returned with 'Alternative Light Source' in 2015, their third studio album.
Neil Barnes died in 2022. The project had sometimes included live keyboardist and vocalist Adam Wren for performances. Their music, particularly the first two albums, still gets played in clubs and gets mentioned when people talk about that era of UK electronic music.
