They came together as friends with a shared interest in music, drawing from rock, punk, and reggae influences. Their debut album 'Por Enquanto' came out in 1984.
That first album included 'Sampa,' a song that became closely associated with the city of São Paulo. The track captured something about the urban experience there, mixing social observation with a musical style that pulled from different genres. It wasn't just a local hit; it gave the band a national profile almost immediately.
They kept recording through the decade, putting out albums like 'Dois' in 1986 and 'Quatro' in 1989. Renato Russo, who wrote much of the material, died in 1996. The band released an acoustic album that same year called 'O Segundo Acústico.'
