Lemar Obika grew up in Tottenham, North London, listening to his parents' soul and reggae records. As a teenager he got into Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Lauryn Hill, whose more thoughtful songs stuck with him.
His debut album 'Dedicated' came out in 2003, with the single 'Dance (With U)' reaching number one in the UK. He followed that with albums like 'Time to Grow' in 2004 and 'The Truth About Love' in 2006. Some of his better-known songs include 'If There's Any Justice' and 'Someone Should Tell You'.
He's worked with other British singers like Natasha Bedingfield and Emeli Sandé. The writing tends to be personal, dealing with relationships and everyday questions rather than big statements.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
