Leno Brega

Leno Brega came out of Cuiabá, Brazil in the 1980s, working in the brega style that was popular there. His 1986 single 'Trepada Em Cuiabá' became a hit, though its explicit lyrics drew criticism from some quarters. The song's blunt approach to sexuality found an audience anyway, and it remains his best-known track.

He kept recording through the 1990s, putting out albums like 'O Safado' and 'O Filho de Deus.' His live band included Joãozinho do Carmo on guitar and Zé Doca on bass. Other songs in his catalog, like 'Relembrando Fodas' and 'Estupradora,' followed a similar pattern of direct, often provocative language set to brega rhythms.

While his work was sometimes dismissed as crude, it spoke plainly about working-class experiences and desires in a way that resonated. Later Brazilian brega artists have acknowledged his influence, and his songs still turn up in covers and playlists.
