Leny Mattos was born in 1923 in Nova Iguaçu, a town in Rio de Janeiro. She grew up hearing her father play guitar and the local samba rhythms around her. In the 1950s, she began performing in bars and clubs.
Her song 'Tome Leitinho' came out in 1956. It was a ballad about a mother's love for her child, and it became widely popular in Brazil. The song gave her the nickname 'A Voz do Amor,' or The Voice of Love.
She recorded other songs like 'Não Te Superei' and albums including 'Amor Proibido' from 1954 and 'Leny Mattos Canta Vinicius de Moraes' from 1976. Her band included guitarist Valdir Isaurino, drummer Ivanildo Neves, and bassist Walter Wande.
