Leon Haywood came out of Washington, D.C. in the early 1970s with a sound that mixed soul and funk. His 1971 self-titled debut included 'Don't Push It, Don't Force It,' which became his biggest hit. That track's groove and straightforward advice gave him a solid R&B following.
He followed with albums like 'Love Is Precious' and 'Inside of You,' and another notable song, 'I Want'a Do Something Freaky To You.' His band, the Soulful Six, included drummer James Gadson and guitarist Leon Patterson. The music kept a steady, danceable feel without chasing every trend.
Haywood's later work didn't match the commercial peak of that early single, but the records maintained a consistent mood. He wrote and performed through the decade, leaving behind a handful of tracks that still turn up in samples and playlists.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
