Les Yeux Noirs formed in 1992 around violinist and singer Tamara Obrovac and guitarist Pierre-Yves Le Jeune. They were joined by accordionist Denis Cuniot, double bassist François Causse, and percussionist Yvan Levaï. The group's sound drew from Eastern European folk and Romani traditions, filtered through French chanson.
Their 2000 album 'Rêve' gave them their most recognizable song, a spare and yearning ballad that became something of a calling card. The track distilled their approach to something quite direct, even as their work sometimes drew questions about cultural borrowing.
They released several albums through the 1990s and 2000s, including their self-titled debut in 1995, 'Tzigane' in 1997, and 'Nomade' in 2003. The music was built on Obrovac's violin and voice, Le Jeune's guitar, and the rhythmic push of the accordion and percussion.
