Letters to Cleo formed in Boston in 1990, with Kay Hanley on vocals and guitar, Greg McKenna on guitar, Michael Eisenstein on bass, and Stacy Jones on drums. Their name came from a stack of letters Hanley had written to an old flame. In 1994, they put out their first album, 'Aurora Gory Alice,' which included the track 'I Want You To Want Me.' That song got a lot of radio play and became their best-known hit.
After 'Aurora Gory Alice,' the band released a few more albums through the late '90s and early 2000s, like 'Wholesale Meats and Fish' and 'Go!' They had other songs that stuck around, too, such as 'Here And Now' and 'Co-Pilot.' Hanley's voice, clear and a little sharp, gave their music a distinct feel, even when they were covering other people's material.
Letters to Cleo didn't stay together as a full-time band for very long, but 'I Want You To Want Me' kept turning up in movies and TV shows years later. It's the one most people remember, though fans might point to deeper cuts like 'Dangerous Type' or 'Anchor' from their catalog.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
