Editor's note

Level 42's bass-driven funk-pop from the Isle of Wight

A British band that turned jazz fusion into dance-floor hits in the 1980s.

If you want to hear their peak, put on 'Something About You' or 'Lessons In Love.' That's the sound they nailed, funky, melodic, and impossible not to move to.

They had a knack for making complex rhythms feel effortless on the radio. 'Something About You' from 1983 is a perfect example, it's all tight bass and clean keyboards, but it sticks in your head like a pure pop song. That blend gave them a string of hits that still sound crisp today.

They started in 1979 with a jazz-fusion sound, then sharpened it into something more direct. 'Standing in the Light' in 1983 broke them internationally, and albums like 'World Machine' followed through the '80s. The band split in 2002 but has played reunion shows since 2008.

Level 42 formed on the Isle of Wight in 1979 with Mark King on bass and vocals, Mike Lindup on keyboards and vocals, Boon Gould on drums, and Alan Murphy on guitar. Their early sound drew from progressive rock and jazz fusion, but they developed something more direct and rhythmic as they went along.

Their 1983 album 'Standing in the Light' broke through internationally, driven by the single 'Something About You.' That track, along with later hits like 'Lessons In Love' and 'Running In The Family,' became staples on dance floors and radio playlists through the 1980s. King's prominent, melodic basslines and the band's blend of funk, pop, and synthesizer arrangements defined their commercial peak.

They released several more albums through the late '80s and early '90s, including 'World Machine' and 'Stardust,' but their momentum slowed as the decade turned. The band broke up in 2002, though they've reunited occasionally for live shows since 2008.
