Liam Finn grew up in New Zealand, the son of Crowded House's Neil Finn. He started playing music early, forming the band Betchadupa with his brothers in 2004. Their debut album 'The Golden Mile' got some attention, but it was his solo work that really defined him.
His first solo album 'I'll Be Lightning' came out in 2007. The song 'Second Chance' from that record became something of a calling card, a quiet ballad about starting over. He followed it with tracks like 'Energy Spent' and 'Better To Be' that kept to that same intimate, thoughtful space.
There were some rough patches along the way, including a period where he struggled publicly. He eventually worked through it and kept making music, though the details of that time are less important than what came out of it. The songs themselves tell that story well enough.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
