Background notes

Archive material and source history

Liam Reilly came up in Dublin and started out with the band Bell X1 in the mid-1990s. He left after a few years to work on his own material. His first solo album, 'The Green Lights,' came out in 1999. The title track, 'Somewhere in Europe,' got some radio play and became his best-known song.

He kept putting out records over the next decade or so, including 'Tourist' in 2001 and 'The Plank' in 2004. There was also a project with the London Symphony Orchestra in 2012. He worked with other Irish musicians like Sinéad O'Connor and Gavin Friday along the way.

Reilly's career had some difficult stretches, including a 2003 arrest and struggles with his health. He kept recording through it, with albums like 'This is My Life' in 2008 and 'The Return of the Magnificent Seven' in 2016.
