Lil Tef came out of Salvador, Bahia, with a sound that mixed Afro-Bahian rhythms and modern pop. Their track 'Ritmo do Olodum' caught on and became something of an anthem in Brazil. The band was led by vocalist Thiago Silva, with Mateus Carvalho on drums, Thiago Araújo on bass, and Sérgio Neto on guitar.
They released a string of albums starting with 'Ritmo do Olodum' in 2016, followed by 'Olodum Ritmando' in 2017, 'O Axé Chegou' in 2018, 'Ritmo de Salvador' in 2019, and 'A Festa É Aqui' in 2020. Their music drew heavily from the traditional percussion of Olodum, a well-known ensemble from the same region.
At one point, Lil Tef faced accusations of plagiarism and questions about whether they were properly crediting Olodum's heritage. Silva said their work was meant as a tribute and acknowledged the need for more collaboration and respect. The band's music became associated with Salvador's Carnival celebrations.
