Little Anthony & The Imperials formed in the 1950s with Anthony Gourdine, Clarence Collins, Ernest Wright, Jr., and Sammy Strain. They were originally called The Imperials before adding 'Little Anthony' to the name. Their first big hit came in 1958 with 'Tears on My Pillow,' which got them noticed on the R&B scene.
They had a run of successful singles through the 1960s, including 'Goin' Out of My Head' and 'Hurts So Bad.' One of their most enduring songs from that period is 'You Are (The World To Me),' a ballad that became a staple of their live shows. The group's sound was built around close vocal harmonies and Gourdine's distinctive lead.
The lineup changed over time, with Collins leaving in the early 1970s and Strain passing away in 1982. They kept performing with different members, often revisiting their older material. Their recordings from the late 1950s and 1960s remain the ones people know best.
