Little brother

Little Brother was a hip-hop trio from Durham, North Carolina, with Phonte Coleman and Big Pooh on vocals and 9th Wonder handling production. Their sound had a soulful quality that felt grounded in the late 90s and early 2000s, when they started putting out music. Songs like "Lovin' It" and "I See Now" captured their chemistry, mixing straightforward beats with conversational lyrics that didn't try too hard to impress.

They released The Listening in 2003, which got attention for its unpolished, back-to-basics approach. The Minstrel Show followed in 2005, leaning into more reflective territory without losing their easygoing delivery. By the time Getback came out in 2007, they had settled into a groove that felt both familiar and quietly inventive, anchored by tracks like "Can't Win For Losing" and "Nighttime Maneuvers."

What stuck with people wasn't a grand narrative or dramatic arc, but the consistency of their work, three rappers and a producer who sounded like they were actually in the same room, figuring it out as they went. There were label issues and pauses along the way, but their catalog holds up because it never pretended to be anything it wasn't.
