Lobisomem Capoeira formed in Salvador, Brazil in 1995, led by vocalist and guitarist Marcos Suzano. Their debut album 'Mundo Canibal' came out in 1997, and they built a reputation for energetic live shows that mixed capoeira rhythms with reggae and rock. The band's lineup included percussionist Carlinhos Brown, bassist Toni Costa, drummer Jackson Costa, and guitarist Marcio Mello.
Their 2001 album 'Revolve' featured the track 'Nas Voltas Que o Mundo Dá,' which got significant airplay and helped them reach listeners outside Brazil. Other songs like 'Benguela Me Chama' and 'O Berimbau Pede Paz' show how they worked traditional capoeira elements into their sound.
In 2002, Lobisomem Capoeira won Best Brazilian Rock Band at the MTV Video Music Brazil Awards, and 'Revolve' took Best Brazilian Album at the Latin Grammys. Their lyrics sometimes addressed social and political themes, which drew criticism from some quarters while others appreciated their direct approach.
