Editor's note

Local H, the Illinois duo that kept guitar rock alive

A two-piece band from Zion that turned raw guitar and drums into a long-running alternative rock story.

For a quick sense of their range, try 'Bound For The Floor' and 'Laminate Man.' They're both loud, but in different ways.

They landed on college radio in the mid-90s with 'Bound For The Floor,' a track that became a staple of that era's alternative rock. Songs like 'Eddie Vedder' and 'Hands On The Bible' sharpened their sound, a mix of aggression and introspection that never really softened. Even on later albums, that guitar-driven approach stayed central, which is why a track like 'Laminate Man' from their top songs still feels like it belongs to them.

Scott Lucas and drummer Joe Daniels started in Zion, Illinois, releasing 'Ham Fisted' in 1995. After 'As Good As Dead' in 1996, Daniels left in 1999, and Lucas kept the band going with shifting drummers through albums like 'Here Comes the Zoo' and '12 Angry Months.' They've put out nine studio albums total, with Lucas as the constant.

Local H started as a duo from Zion, Illinois, with guitarist and vocalist Scott Lucas and drummer Joe Daniels. Their second album, 'As Good As Dead,' came out in 1996 and included the song 'Bound For The Floor,' which got attention on college radio. That track, along with others like 'Eddie Vedder' and 'Hands On The Bible,' helped define their sound during the alternative rock years.

Joe Daniels left the band in 1999, and Ryan Harding took over on drums. They kept putting out albums, including 'Here Comes the Zoo' in 2000 and '12 Angry Months' in 2004. Their music often leaned into darker, more introspective territory, which sometimes drew criticism, but Lucas has said he was just writing about human experience.

They've released nine studio albums total, starting with 'Ham Fisted' in 1995. The band's lineup has shifted over time, but Lucas has remained the constant, steering Local H through various phases without losing that raw, guitar-driven approach.
