Lola Flores was born Dolores Flores Ruiz in 1923 in Jerez de la Frontera. She started performing in the streets and tablaos of Andalusia as a young woman, where her talent for dance and singing became apparent. By the 1940s, she was working professionally, singing flamenco, copla, and bolero.
Her version of the traditional song "A Tu Vera" came out in 1949 and became her signature piece. The song's direct, yearning lyrics about devotion found a perfect match in her passionate delivery.
She kept performing for decades, her voice and style becoming a recognizable part of Spanish popular music.
