Los Amantes De La Cumbia formed in 1989 with Luis "Chacho" Gaitán on vocals, Gilberto "Yiyo" Torres on accordion, Manuel "Pino" González on electric guitar, Ramiro "Nene" Ángeles on bass, and Lorenzo "Loren" Cortés on drums. They were a Mexican cumbia band that put out their first album, 'Penumbras De Amor,' in 1990. That title track became their most recognizable song, along with others like 'Acaríciame' and 'Amarte Hasta La Muerte.'
Their sound mixed cumbia with some modern touches, which didn't always sit well with traditionalists in the genre early on. Chacho Gaitán's lyrics and comments sometimes stirred things up, too. They kept recording through the '90s, with albums like 'El Loco' in 1992, 'La Cumbia No Para' in 1994, and a self-titled release in 1998.
You can still hear their songs around, especially 'Penumbras De Amor.' It's one of those tracks that just stuck.
