Los Cojones formed in São Paulo in the mid-1980s with Pedro Paulo on vocals, Guile Figueiredo on guitar, Luiz Henrique on bass, and Ricardo Borges on drums. Their music came out of that city's rock scene, and they wrote lyrics that dealt directly with police violence and corruption at a time when such topics could get a band in trouble.
Their 1988 song "Bloqueio" became a kind of anthem, its chorus about refusing to work and staying in one's corner to make love catching on with listeners. Other tracks like "Curva do Demônio" and "Não Há Mal" followed a similar vein of direct, confrontational writing set to rock music.
In 1989, the band was arrested on drug charges after a show in Rio de Janeiro, which led to a break in their activity. They managed to put out a few albums despite the controversies that seemed to follow them around.
