Los Gallitos de Chihuahua formed in the early 1960s in Chihuahua City, with three brothers at the core: Heliodoro 'Lloro' Nevárez on accordion and vocals, Conrado 'Cone' Nevárez on bass, and Francisco 'Pancho' Nevárez on drums. Their debut album 'Para Usted con Cariño' came out in 1964 and included 'San Marcos,' a song that caught on quickly and became their best-known track.
After Heliodoro Nevárez died in a car accident in 1976, Conrado took over lead vocals and accordion. The band kept recording and playing, mixing in cumbia, ranchera, and bolero touches alongside their norteño foundation. In the 1980s, they faced some public scrutiny over rumors about substance use during shows.
