Los Llayras formed in 1963 as a family group with siblings Carlos, César, and Pedro Llayra, plus their cousin Arturo Llayra García. They came out of Peru with a sound that mixed Andean folk elements with more contemporary rhythms. Their debut single "Amame" became popular early on, and other songs like "El Verde de Tus Ojos" and "Vuela Mariposa" show the melodic, heartfelt side of their catalog.
During the 1970s, the band ran into trouble with Peru's government under Juan Velasco Alvarado. They spent several years in Argentina, continuing to record there.
They put out albums like "Canto a la Libertad" in 1972 and "Todos Somos Libres" in 1975. The core trio of Carlos, César, and Pedro Llayra stayed with the group through lineup changes over time. Their music, including tracks like "Buscándote" and "Mi Primer Amor," kept a connection to Peruvian listeners even during their period abroad.
