Los Pericos

Los Pericos formed in Buenos Aires in 1986. They're a reggae band, though their sound has always felt more like a local take on the genre than a strict imitation. Their 1989 album 'El Ritual de la Banana' established them early on, and by the mid-90s they were putting out records like 'Pura Sangre' and 'Radio Revolucion' that found an audience across Latin America.

In 2002, they released the song 'Runaway,' which became their most widely recognized track. It's a straightforward, upbeat reggae-pop tune that got picked up for films and commercials. Other songs like 'Pupilas Lejanas' and 'Waiting' show their range within that accessible, melodic style. They've kept a fairly steady lineup over time, with Juanchi Baleiron on vocals and a horn section that gives their recordings a particular texture.

Baleiron was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 1999 and returned to performing after treatment. Their lyrics often touch on social issues, which has drawn both support and criticism at different points.
