Los Pettinellis formed in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1995 with Juan Campodónico on vocals and guitar, Gonzalo Castex on bass, and Pablo Abdala on drums. They put out their first album, Ciudadano del Mundo, in 1998, followed by Tonto y Feliz in 2000 and El Gran Deceso in 2001.
Their 2003 album Hospital gave them a title track that became one of their best-known songs, along with others like Amparax and Asesino Bendito. The band's sound mixed rock with jazz, folk, and electronic touches, and they sometimes worked with other musicians like Daniel Melingo and Kevin Johansen.
Over time, Martín Ibarburu joined on keyboards and vocals. They kept recording through the 2000s and 2010s, with albums including El Espejo, Invisible, and Infinito. Their music didn't fit neatly into categories, which made some critics uneasy but connected with listeners who liked the experimental edge.
