Los Rancheros formed in Mexico City in 1968, a group of friends who started playing together. Their sound mixed traditional Mexican music with rock and roll, which wasn't common at the time. They built a following through live shows, and their 1976 album 'El Che y Los Rolling Stones' gave them their most recognizable song.
That song, 'El Che y Los Rolling Stones,' became something of an anthem. Its lyrics mentioning Che Guevara and The Rolling Stones sparked some debate. Other songs like 'Cancion Para Un Amigo' and 'Mujer' also became part of their set.
They released albums like 'Los Rancheros' in 1971, 'Rancherísima' in 1973, and 'El Último Mexicano' in 1985. The original lineup included Jorge Gamboa on vocals, José Luis 'El Greñas' Campuzano on guitar, Antonio Casas on drums, Alejandro del Bosque on bass, and Roberto 'Pollo' Ugarte on keyboards. The band's membership changed over time, but that core group was there at the start.
