Los Terribles del Norte came out of Tulare in California's Central Valley in the late 1980s. They built their sound around narcocorridos, a style of Mexican folk music that tells stories about drug trafficking and the people involved in it. Their songs like 'El Franco y Guerrero' and 'Jesús y Juan Luis' became popular for their direct lyrics and straightforward melodies.
In 1998, their album 'El Franco y Guerrero' brought them wider attention. The title track told the story of a drug lord's rise and fall, and it connected with listeners on both sides of the border. The Mexican government wasn't happy with narcocorridos gaining popularity, but the band kept playing at local bars and clubs anyway.
Their music sometimes got them into trouble. In 2007, a family sued them, claiming one of their songs had inspired a murder. They had to cancel some shows and deal with legal threats for a while. Francisco Javier Hernandez sang lead and wrote most of their material.
