Lotto King Karl formed in Berlin in 1985 around Wolfgang Rohde, a musician of Congolese descent who went by Wölli. He worked with his brother Rainer and bassist Konrad Kalkowski, mixing punk with Afrobeat and funk at a time when that combination wasn't common in German music. Their first album came out in 1988.
Their song "(Liebe Ist)...wie Malaria" became something of an anthem, and they had other tracks like "Am Tor zur weiten Welt" and "Da ist die Tuer (Hey, Mr. Plattenmann)" that carried their sound.
They put out a few more records including Viva la Revolucion in 1989 and Asu in 1991 before Babylon in 1993. Their music had a raw, energetic quality that didn't fit neatly into either the punk scene or mainstream German pop at the time.
